Chilling in the Sunshine

Bad St Leonard is where we stock up at the supermarket before calling into the filling station where the wonderful Badidoes cooks local game food to the highest standard – yes, at the filling station!

Or drop in to see the Presse twins in the Café-Konditorei Presse.

Up in Klippitzorl, a favourite is Barbara’s traditional alpengasthof, The Hochegger with its sun soaked terrace and authentic restaurant. It’s located next to the lifts and ski-school.

The nearby town of Wolfsberg has its own micro-brewery, Brauhof Franz Joseph where eight local and exceptional beers are brewed on the premises. After beer and sausages it’s a short stroll along to the Café Konditorei Hecher to join the townsfolk for after dinner cakes and coffee.

Keeping fit is not a problem, even after all the cakes. Two miles down the mountain is the Moselebauer, a Spa hotel with health and sports facilities.

There are many trails leading from the chalet. Klippitzorl is on one of Austria’s most famous long distance paths. It can be followed north or south for miles … or just as far as the nearest mountain hutte with its sun terrace, food and drink.

Fish or sail on the nearby lakes, like Pack. It’s just an hour’s drive to Wörther and a little further on there’s Millstatter See www.millstaettersee.com.

There are opportunities for climbing, paragliding and hang gliding with Christian Grubler and mountain biking with Wolfgang Url.

Wolfsberg has an excellent outdoor pool.

Things to see locally include the castle in Wolfsberg but remember Graz with its opera house was European Capital of Culture in 2004 Graz (www.graztourism.at) and Klagenfurt is a prize among medieval cities. www.klagenfurt.co.uk; both just 45 minutes away.
